TONGA TO HOST PACINET 2013
Tonga will host the week long PICISOC Conference, PacINET 2013 from the 9th to the 13th of September 2013. This annual event which brings together internet experts from around the region will meet in Nuku’alofa next week to discuss issues prevalent to ICT development in the Pacific. This year’s theme “Gateway of Opportunity” is a reflection of Tonga’s latest technological advancement with the newly introduced fibre optic cable system.
According to the Director for the Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr Paula P Ma’u, “The Government of Tonga is very pleased and excited to be hosting this regional meeting here in Nuku’alofa as it will be our chance to showcase Tonga’s transition into a new era in Telecommunications. With the Cable system now in place introducing faster internet speed, higher capacity and broader bandwidth systems, it is fundamental that measures are in place to address the global issues affecting the development of the ICT sector. This Conference will provide the opportunity to dialogue and discuss resolutions to addressing these ICT impediments especially solutions that will positively impact Tonga and the Pacific region”, Mr Paula P Ma’u said.
ICT development is a key priority in Government’s Strategic Development Plan and such regional initiatives further complement the work of the ICT sector in Tonga.
The Conference will discuss issues in relation to IXP, IPv6, cyber security, network security, Internet Governance and Policy and internet research in the Pacific.
The Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society (PICISOC) represents the interests of internet users in the Oceania Pacific Region and meets annually at different Pacific Island Countries each year.
This year’s PacINET Conference is being hosted and organised by Tonga’s Ministry of Information and Communications and is being financially supported by the Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC), Digicel Tonga, Office Equipment, ICAAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and ISOC, the Internet Society. The Conference will be held at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku’alofa.

Notice of the results of the PICISOC Board election has been received, with many thanks to ICANN for help coordinating the election this year.
Thank you members for your votes. We had nearly double the votes compared to last year! (But still much room for improvement in future.)
Therefore I am pleased to announce that the PICISOC Board members elected in 2013 are:

It is worth noting that the election results were very close this year, which reflects the five excellent candidates who stood. I’d like to thank them all for the commitment and time they have offered by standing as candidates.
The Board has previously released only the names of the elected and for consistency, this is also the approach this year. However any individual members would like to view the results from ICANN, including number of votes for each candidate, can contact via email and we can provide this information.
A special Board meeting will be called during PacINET this week to select Board positions for 2013-2014 and we will let members know as soon as possible.
Thanks again to members who voted and to our candidates and welcome to our new Board Members. Looking forward to a very busy and productive year ahead for PICISOC!

The annual PICISOC Conference, PacINET 2013, is scheduled to be held at the Fa’onelua convention centre, Nuku’alofa, Tonga. Our host will be the Tonga Ministry of Information

This year’s event celebrates the emergence of high speed Internet connectivity at the Kingdom of Tonga.
Our theme is “Gateway of Opportunity” and the programme is being coordinated to showcase as much as possible about what is happening in our region to cater for access opportunities for internet users in the Pacific.
Each year the Board holds elections for half of its membership. This year, three positions on the Board are due for re-election. The Board members whose term are coming to an end are: Maureen Hilyard, Andrew Molivurae and David Leeming
Nominations are currently being requested and will close on 16 August 2013. Elections will then begin as the PICISOC constitution sets out that the new Board must be in place before the AGM which is held at PacINET in September in Tonga.
1. The process for nomination of candidates for this year’s election is as follows:
a) Nominations must be sent to the Election Committee, Chaired by Ellen Strickland Board Vice-chair, at info@picisoc.org
b) Nominations must be received by UTC600 August 16 2012
c) Nominations must include a bio (about 100 words) and a photograph of the nominee
2. The process for the election of the Board members will be as follows:
a) The election will open after nominations close
b) Information on the ballot process will be sent to PICISOC members eligible to vote
c) The Election Committee will announce the successful candidates directly after the election
e) A Board meeting will be called to elect officers before the AGM to be held at the PacINET in Tonga.
