A search on Google Images for ‘hacker’ brings up a variation on the same theme of solo, hooded, largely male looking figures hunched over a keyboard, lines of computer code crossing their screens. 

But is that all a coder really is? 

Not according to the “hustler” behind Girl Geek Academy, Sarah Moran, who in red lipstick and a fruit adorned dress is part of a movement sharing the side of coding that is social, fun, and collaborative. 

Ms. Moran, who co-founded the five-year-old organisation Girl Geek Academy, from Melbourne, is in Samoa to launch a branch here, starting with a pilot workshop for girls and their mums this Saturday.

The idea is simple: get girls together to explore an exciting new world, and offer them a chance to try a career path they might not have thought of before.

“Tech is not being sold to young people as a career path because we don’t know how to sell it. We know what a scientist looks like, a hairdresser, you can picture a baker in their job. But can you picture what a technologist does?," she said. 

“What even is that? Because we don’t know what it looks like it’s hard to want to be that."

Computer coding, in its simplest form, is writing instructions for computers and computer programs. It’s a language Ms. Moran learned to write when she was five years old on some of her school’s first computers, so she knows children can – and should – learn it.

In the nearly 40 years since the internet was developed, the information technology (I.T.) sector has been predominantly full of men.

When it comes to creating new products, international statistics show just two per cent of all I.T. patents were filed by women-only developer teams, while 88 per cent were made by male-only teams. 

In 2015, the National Centre for Women and Information Technology in America reported that women hold one-quarter of all I.T. jobs, a proportion that has even been declining since 1991. 

Of those women, just 21 per cent call themselves computer programmers and 18 per cent are software developers. 

“We run all-girl classes: not to exclude boys, but so that girls know that coding is something that girls do. There is a lack of women in technology but that’s not the message we give to them – we are not reinforcing that women don’t do things, we are trying to really change that language,” Ms. Moran said.

“If you have a whole heap of people that all think the same, you end up solving less problems. You have a lesser range of thinking to be able to solve those problems.

“It also makes for a healthier environment.”ADVERTISEMENT

In Samoa, girls and their mothers, aunts or grandmothers are invited along learn to code too and help build a thriving passion for the work at home, will get their first taste of Girl Geek Academy’s #MissMakesCode programme on Saturday.

Ms. Moran is working with Vaitele-Fou’s Tagiilima Neemia, who, fresh out of her Master's in Cyber Security, wants to help young Samoan women find the same love for tech that she does.

The session will be free and will include important elements of cyber safety and life online. It will aim to teach the skills needed to write basic code such as building and customising their own game or choreographing an animated character’s dance.

“The first place we start is around what even is coding?," Ms. Moran said.

“Then we’ll think about what does it feel like to build the internet, what does it feel like emotionally? 

“The experience we hope to convey is that building the internet is fun, and happy and it can be a really beautiful part of your life."

Importantly, Ms. Moran wants the workshop to connect the girls and their mothers to each other, make new friends and possibly future innovation partners.

Ms. Moran said when she met Ms. Neemia in Melbourne at the Australian Awards Women’s Leadership Initiative, they became like sisters.

“The similarities are very strong and actually it’s like having a second brain – so far we’ve just agreed on everything, that is how we’ve been able to do everything so quickly,” she said. 

Girl Geek Academy was born on International Women’s Day in 2014 with a mind to run 'techy' events, training and networking in a way that better-suited women's needs. Their male colleagues at that time couldn’t understand why women weren’t attending their events, Ms. Moran said.

There was too much beer and pizza, she said. So, she and four co-founders created something a little different: with lighter food, more water and a lot more sunlight.

“It’s very different to the stereotypes about what we think about technology and coding, we think of a hacker image alone in the dark but for me it was always me and my friends having a chat about what we were building, and how to get better," she said. 

She said I.T. and coding education needs to change all the time, almost at the pace of the technology being built by it. Repetitive teaching quickly becomes boring and can put young children, like the girls the Academy is trying to capture, off the idea of learning to code, Ms. Moran warns.

“It’s a risk we are seeing in Australia and it’s a risk I would like to leapfrog here [in Samoa] altogether, if possible. You don’t want coding to be uncool," she said. 

“Our computers are cool – we do cool stuff, we take cool photos, we make cool videos: tech itself is cool, so building the tech needs to stay cool too.”

PORT VILA, Vanuatu – The Office of the Vanuatu Telecommunications, Radiocommunications and Broadcasting Regulator (TRBR) today announced the successful transition of Vanuatu’s .vu country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) to Neustar’s registry platform.

Neustar was selected to be the Registry Operator for the .vu ccTLD in August 2019 following a highly competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process designed to identify the provider that would be best positioned to carry the namespace forward. With extensive experience of registry transitions and operations both large and small, Neustar Vanuatu Limited (Neustar) is poised to bring further growth, increased performance and security to the .vu domain.

TRBR has been working with Neustar for the last few months to ensure a smooth transition, including technical preparations and collaboration with industry and business stakeholders. Following these preparations, and a successful DNS migration, the .vu namespace was transitioned to Neustar’s industry leading registry platform. The Regulator, Mr. Brian Winji said that Neustar’s capabilities and experience are well suited to support the growth and promotion of .vu. “It was important for us to partner with a company who has a demonstrated history of professionalism, innovation, and reliability. Neustar has a strong reputation in the domain name registry space with extensive ccTLD experience. Their capabilities are well suited to taking the .vu namespace forward.”

Cape Canaveral, FL. 16 December 2019 – Kacific1 was launched successfully into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 7.10pm Eastern Standard Time  (UTC-5) on 16 December 2019 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA. It was placed into its target geostationary transfer orbit 33 minutes following initial ignition.

Owned by Kacific Broadband Satellites Group (Kacific), the Boeing-built communications satellite will stream high-speed broadband to 25 nations in South East Asia and the Pacific Islands via 56 high-throughput beams.

“Kacific1 is the newest and most powerful commercial satellite operating in the Asia-Pacific region, placing Kacific in an excellent position to grow alongside these markets,” said Christian Patouraux, Kacific founder and CEO. “Its range of services, from mobile backhaul to broadband internet via VSAT terminals, will provide a catalyst for positive change in the nations it is about to serve. I’m thrilled to start seeing the social and economic impact of Kacific1.”

Kacific1 will cover Indonesia, The Philippines, Timor-Leste and South Asia with 28 spot beams, while the Pacific Islands and New Zealand will be covered with a further 28 beams.

Following a sequence of in-orbit manoeuvres and tests that are expected to take approximately six weeks, Kacific1 is scheduled to begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2020.

Kacific’s momentous first launch was celebrated in Florida by more than 160 guests from across Asia Pacific representing telecommunication and internet service provider customers, government agencies and regulators, not-for-profit organisations, universities and Kacific investors, management and staff.

“Celebrating this launch with Kacific’s international supporters has been an incredible and affirming experience. I’m very thankful for the wonderful energy they have brought to this unforgettable moment,” said Patouraux.

Background

As an analyst programmer, I design, develop, and implement software programs, which are solutions to real-life challenges. I am in this line of profession for past four year. I started my professional career as a software developer at Datec Fiji Limited. Currently, I work as an analyst programmer for Educational Quality & Assessment Programme (EQAP).

I am the only female developer in EQAP’s Information Technology (IT) team. In essence, my work is about designing and developing information systems solutions to help improve efficiency and effectiveness of the workplace or operations in question.

My work ranges from the simple to the complex; from training a system’s end-users to developing a new application from scratch.

Motivation

The perception of society during my young days was that STEM was a male dominating field. Families and communities always discouraged young girls to step into this field. I wanted to be different and explore this challenging area. This was my initial reason for choosing science. When I became a full science student, learning became even more exhilarating, especially with Chemistry and Biology.  As a result, I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. I had the perception if I am successful in this field then I can inspire other young females to step into this field and break the social stigmas.

However, my career choice changed when I received a scholarship to study in Malaysia. In the university where I studied Software Engineering, I was one of three women in a class of about 100 students. This was where I really felt that the gender disparity.  I did not let that unsettle me though. I immersed myself into studies.

The experience of learning how to code, debug, and build software programs pushed me beyond my comfort zone. The best thing about programming is that it allows you to build things on your own. It can be a simple program or an ambitious one.

The job itself requires a lot of dedication and precision. One needs to be highly motivated. I spent countless late nights just to learn more. While it was tough, it was incredibly rewarding and continues to be. I work in an incredible team they highly motivate me to step into more challenging projects. Lastly, determination, hard work and a resilient spirit among other things are key factors. I take on the challenges, and work in a team and my gender does not define me.

Today’s celebration of International Day of People with Disabilities at our local Park and various remote island areas in Fiji , held an historic event whereby all the local Disability People Organizations came together with Community Volunteers to map out walkways and pavements using their mobile to collect data in pairs.

A Team consisted of 5 Persons with disabilities (blind, deaf, spinal injury, intellectual, physio-social) partnered with 5 abled persons (young university students, volunteering professionals from corporates, individuals that came in from rural areas) to share their experiences of a street and record their feedback into using a quick mapping tool to do an accessibility audit as a competition – Street Level Map-a-thon. This was not an easy task as there were 10 Teams and at the same time on the beautiful island of Taveuni – there were similar participants using the mobile app and sending photos of their own celebration to create an Accessibility Map for Fiji.

There soon will be a documentary to be released on how the event started from being an Idea discussed at a Pacific Connect Dialogue – Fiji for “Technology enabling inclusiveness” to what it is today with video interviews showing how mindsets and perceptions were changed as everyone worked together.

Our local DPOs were able to showcase their achievements and it was amazing to see some  of the products that some of the women had crafted and displayed to sell. Fiji Disabled People’s Organization had launched their own documentary and magazine that showcased their creative talents.

It is my hope and dream through this Project where Suva as a pilot site creates a story that will be an inspiration to others. The accessibility data collected will be used shared with DPO stakeholders as it is a stock take of what we have and where we as a community can build up. #Digital_Inclusion #FutureIsAccessible
